The final weekend of the Head On Photo Festival is just around the corner, so here are some events you can’t miss

WHAT’S ON TODAY SATURDAY 27 NOVEMBER

PLEASE NOTE: all times are Sydney time AEDT

11-12 PM Artist talk with Jamie James and Thanh Vuong

Hear Jamie James talk about their queer and sex radical/fetish performance social documentary – an archive of some 30 years – and their featured exhibition Humans being.

Vietnamese-Australian artist Thanh Vuong will talk about his award-winning exhibition In my garden the trees are changing.  This is his contribution to the rich tapestry of homoerotic art.

12-1 PM Workshop – NFTs and the impact on photographers and collectors

Come to Paddington Reservoir Garden and hear all about NFTs and the effect they are having on artists and the artworld.  This talk is a must if you are interested in creating your own non-fungible tokens!

Our panel includes:

  • Ross Harley, Emeritus Professor and former Dean of UNSW Art and Design, an award-winning artist, writer and educator whose career crosses the bounds of traditional and creative arts research
  • emerging Sydney-based artist Eva Nolan who investigates the role of biological taxonomies in our understanding of multispecies relationships
  • 18-year-old Indigenous artist Olivia Anderson who is the young AIME artist who uses totems and traditional Aboriginal symbols to create an NFT collection about her family and their ancestors, and
  • Mez Mia, an art consultant at Justin Miller Art, who project manages the Mint NFT Gallery.

11-12 PM Artist talk with Alli Harper, Helen Jolly and David Wallin

Melbourne-based Helen Jolly and Alli Harper will talk about their exhibition Distanced conversations – a visual correspondence between the two photographic artists as they sought solace in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing events and lockdown.

Australian filmmaker and documentary photographer David Wallin will talk about his show I was too late – a portrait of a life which is at Gaffa Gallery in Sydney’s CBD until 29 November.  The exhibition documents his estranged father’s isolated final moments and thoughts, offering David a final change to understand his father through what he had left behind.

4-5 PM Artist talk with Brendan Blacklock, Lowell Hunter and Milly Hooper

Join us at Paddington Reservoir Gardens as we celebrate the fruition of our almost a year-long Indigenous mentoring program and final exhibition First Sight with an artist talk by three of the artists involved.  Hear all about the incredible work they have produced and their experiences of the program.

Brendan Blacklock – Ngarabal, Biripi – came to photography after working as an environmental scientist and he has never looked back.

Lowell Hunter – Nyul Nyul, Bardi – combines his many talents – dance, art and storytelling – to create work that is richer than just the photo.

Melinda Hooper – Ngiyampaa, Muruwari, Kooma (Ngiyampaa) – founded and built-up Milly Moments especially to capture Indigenous family portraits.
