It started simply with me capturing the things that caught my eye as I walked past – graffiti, the shadow play on a wall, or an abandoned chair. It became habit and as winter approached and the days became shorter I began to explore the areas immediately surrounding my house, in particular the four-block radius that separated my house from the Northcott Estate, the housing commission tower that looms large above Surry Hills. The resulting series, 4 Block Radius, is a portrait of an eclectic, urban neighbourhood on the fringe of the Sydney CBD. Shot during the early hours of the morning Surry Hills, which bustles with elderly immigrants, students, urban professionals and the unemployed and appears deserted. In the absence of humanity the suburb’s streets offer up the discarded ephemera from the night before as proof of their existence. The project was shot on an iphone and is a work in progress.
