Revealing the unlikely persistence of 19th century photographic processes in 21st century art, this exhibition brings together artists who use such temperamental techniques as daguerreotypes, wet collodion prints, cyanotypes or photograms to create images which hark back to metaphysical strands of early photography.
The idea that time and space could be condensed in an image, and that, through light, something could be created from nothing, were radical and magical concepts. In the works in Ghosting Machine, subjects are suspended in the frame, as if their ghosts have been made visible; time and space are collapsed; and observed phenomena acquire an other-worldly appearance.
