Ingeborg Tyssen (1945-2002) was one of Australia’s leading photographers of the postwar generation and a major figure in Australian photographic history. This is the first museum retrospective of her work since her memorial show was held at the Art Gallery of NSW in 2002.
Ingeborg Tyssen: Photographs showcases a remarkable body of work produced prior to her untimely and tragic accidental death in 2002. Her works have that rare ability of being able to acutely observe people within their environment. Her earliest photographs, taken in the city streets, fun parks and suburbs of ‘70s Australia and America, radiate a gentle surrealism mixed with urban isolation.
