I have always been a cinephile ever since I can remember. Although it’s not the film plots I usually remember, it’s the visuals and iconic moments, the key images capturing the essence of the film.

All these shots were created with smoke and mirrors. I’m a production crew of one: producer, location manager, director, lighting, cameraman, production designer, art director, props man and wardrobe. The cinematic moments referenced span the history of film from the silent era of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis 1927 through early 1930s Disney animated classics such as Fantasia, as well as 1950s Looney Tunes, Hitchcock, Kubrick and Bergman. The genres run the gamut from science fiction, fantasy, film noir, thriller, horror, comedy and animation. This is an exercise in capturing everything I love about cinema. The mise-en-scène, production design, lighting, tonal range and colour palette, but most of all, that undefinable element, the film’s essence, distilled into one photographic image.

John Dobson is a photographer from Melbourne, Australia. After graduating from Frankfurt International School in Germany, he studied Graphic Design at Maidstone College of Art in the UK, where he first began taking photography seriously. He went on to study at the Royal College of Art in London and spent most of the 1980s working as an art director in advertising, before returning to Australia.

After drifting off to pursue various other creative endeavours, Dobson finally decided the spontaneity of photography and designing within the context of a photographic frame better suited his temperament.

Studying Graphic Design at Art College taught him lateral and conceptual thinking, while a Diploma in Photography from Sydney’s Ultimo TAFE taught the photographic techniques needed to successfully execute his concepts.
