Marea Reed’s exhibition An Internal Rumour takes the viewer on an intangible journey into the gloaming of feeling and memory. Capturing moments of transition and the transience of light and dark, this show explores “ the intersection between childhood dreams and memories…the way they can overlap and merge over time…often you struggle to discern one from another. They’re like a barely heard whisper.”

“Sometimes I’m recreating the experiences I had growing up, sometimes a sense of aspiration or a vivid, recurring dream. At other times, I’m trying to evoke the emotions arising from those echoes of my past.”

The exhibition’s title references philosopher, poet and novelist, George Santayana, who wrote in his Life of Reason, “Memory itself is an internal rumour” – and the images created are meant as testaments to the sensations of evanescence and inconsistency which Santayana describes. “In turn,” says Marea, “I hope those sensations also allow the viewer to bring their own stories to what they see in my work.’
