“Grain” is a body of B&W aerial landscape photographs shot above coastal regions of Eastern Australia, with a particular emphasis on sand. Through the utilization of photographic techniques historically used for reconnaissance and cartography, organic patterns and anthropomorphic forms are revealed within the landscape. By dismantling aspects of traditional landscape photography, most importantly the removal of the sky and horizon and with it a sense of foreground and background, the landscapes take on an ‘other worldly’, almost lunar feel. Sensuality is revealed in the shapes of the landscape, feminine and masculine forms are seductively exposed within the play of light and shadow.
