Chrystal’s practice explores the profoundly transformative reality of matrescence. Simultaneously speaking to, reproductive labour, its encroachment on domesticity and essential daily rituals. A documentary approach to the profound work that is child-rearing.

These images are part of a conversation on the honest experiences of motherhood. A poetic and intimate register that forms part of the visual literacy of our conception, fundamental to our civilisation as we know it.

This ongoing series of works explores the relationship between mother and child, the mother figure and how it has been hijacked, the fragility of life and our disconnection to it. The patriarchal institution of motherhood, maternal age, culture and the sexualisation of the feminine. This work is an agent of change, a commitment to the visual literacy of the maternal experience and a new way to define and revere the mother and child.

Chrystal Louise is an Australian photographic artist residing in the Northern Rivers, NSW, on Bundjalung Country. Chrystal’s practice explores the relationship between mother and child as relevant, respectful and sacrificial. After the birth of her first daughter, she realised her deep interest in the space held by the mother; her lived experience and advocacy for her child did not reflect post-feminist Western ideals.
Chrystal’s exploration interweaves analogue and digital photography with art, sociology, psychology and other dimensions of knowledge. I am combining them to explore societal constructs, reproductive labour, estrangements and rituals of motherhood.
