Nicole Foreshew
A solo exhibition of new photo media works by Sydney-based Aboriginal artist Nicole Foreshew, member of the Wiradjuri nation, Central West NSW. The exhibition will feature two new bodies of work by the artst, titled ‘Unburden’ and ‘Surface Bare I & II’, exploring earth materials, minerals and clay, each work recounts personal and cultural itineraries to significant geological sites in NSW.
Each work serves to investigate concepts of place, tracing personal connections to kin and the material knowledge required to retrieve and revive the body.
“The work features a combination of broad contemporary uses of minerals through documenting passages related to my sacred homelands,” says Nicole.
“Drawing on my recent experiences with mineral collections, held in prominent museums this new body of work is an attempt to raise awareness of the capacity for artists to increase broader access to earth science collections.”
The works reference ‘artefacts’ from some of Australia’s most significant excavations, exploring the embedded relationship with the body and source material – minerals, rock, clay and wood.
This exhibition is part of the 2016 Head On Photo Festival and the Guringai Festival, a celebration of Australia’s First Peoples and Indigenous culture in the northern Sydney region.
Nicole has been the recipient of the Parliament of NSW Aboriginal Art Prize and the NSW Aboriginal Arts Fellowship, exhibited in many significant exhibitions across Australia and internationally and has curated exhibitions including Primavera 2015 at the MCA.
She has taken part in several notable group shows across Australia and internationally, most notably in Maamungun Compatriots, a group exhibition with works by Michael Riley and Jonathan Jones at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi Australia’s Oz Fest Festival in India in 2012, and Shadowlife at Bendigo Art Gallery, curated by Natalie King and Djon Mundine.
