In January 2012 Kerry Pryor documented the work of “Eyes for Africa,” a non-profit organisation that funds cataract eye surgery for people in extremely remote areas of Ethiopia.
The portraits in this body of work document people who are waiting for surgery or to be seen by a doctor. Often the patients have walked for miles, are too poor to afford shoes, quite frail and exhausted by the time they arrive at the clinic.
Photographing a person who is blind was something I had not fully appreciated would come with such added complexities. With very difficult language barriers, many of the sitters struggled to ascertain exactly whre I am.
This visit to Ethiopia changed the way I work. I slowed down and really connected with the sitter.
The work EFA performs is life changing. Cataract surgery is the difference between night and day and patients can usually go home the next day with restored vision.
