Emo, an abbreviation of emotional, originated as an underground music movement in Washington DC in the 1980s. The original movement faded but emo continued in different forms through the 1990s. With its evolution into something more commercial, defined by music and fashion, it has now become mainstream culture. In Mexico, it has never been bigger, but it is an unpopular label. There is a new generation of teenagers who identify as emo, strongly influenced by western pop culture, readily available via the internet, music and television. After violent clashes between punks and emos resulted in deaths, Glorieta Insurgentes, where these pictures were taken, is now heavily policed.
