‘You, Me & All of Us’ explores a new trend in photography – Lomography. In May 2013 Blue Mountains artist Mandy Schöne-Salter is holding an exhibition in Londonderry NSW that features ‘Lomo’ photography of the Londonderry community as created by a talented group of Londonderry Public School students.
Lomo cameras were invented in Russia during the cold war; their original purpose was for spying and espionage, however they were rediscovered in the 1990’s and the way they obscure light effects, capture vibrant colours and a sense of movement spawned a new photographic movement.
Selected children from Londonderry Public School started the project in February 2013, having been introduced by Mandy to Lomography. The kids looked to the people in their local area as their photographic subjects. An added bonus of this was the building of connections and bonds between students and the residents of Londonderry.
From the photographs taken, the students have selected their best works for ‘You, Me & All Of Us’ which will be exhibited as part of the 2013 Head On Photo Festival. The exhibition will take place in a pop-up gallery in Londonderry Arcade from May 23. A photo book of the final photographs will also be printed as a memento for all involved and should be a valuable historic snapshot of Londonderry for future reference.
“I believe the project will help the children broaden their understanding of the rich and distinctive multicultural community they are part of. It will empower them to play a role in helping make Londonderry a more vital, meaningful and nurturing place to live in”, said Mandy.
‘You, Me & All Of Us’ is part of the 2013 Head On Photo Festival. The project is funded by Penrith City Council’s Neighbourhood Renewal Grant 2013; called ‘Magnetic Places’
