A Key deer that died in the wake of Hurricane Irma in Big Pine, Florida, USA. This endangered subspecies of the North American white-tailed deer is only found in the Florida Keys. By the 1950’s, due to poaching and the loss of habitat, the Key deer was on the brink of extinction. Since then, conservation efforts have helped their numbers grow from a few dozen to almost one thousand. But like all endangered species, Key deer remain vulnerable to climate change and the severe weather that results.
