On our first night in Italy, we stayed in a converted farmhouse on the outskirts of Milan. At first light I saw my son was already awake, sitting up, phone in hand, already communicating with his friends back home in Australia and checking social media. I was struck by the contrast of his reliance on technology and the light and colours that wrapped around him, like a centuries-old painting.
